Reviewing the film, Turan said: “ ‘Gravity’ is out of this world. Words can do little to convey the visual astonishment this space opera creates. It is a film whose impact must be experienced in 3-D on a theatrical screen to be fully understood.”

Whipp reported that at an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences screening on Saturday, Oscar voters packed the roughly 1,000-seat Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills to see Alfonso Cuarón’s movie. And judging from the applause when the credits rolled, he said, voters found much to appreciate.

“The visual effects award is probably being engraved as you read this. Nominations for sound mixing and sound editing would seem assured and five-time Oscar nominee Emmanuel Lubezki should have a strong chance to finally win the Academy Award for cinematography,” he wrote.

Whether Bullock will get a nomination for her starring role is another question, though Whipp notes that she’s received better reviews than she did for “The Blind Side,” the movie that won her the lead actress Oscar four years ago.
