‘Gravity,’ ‘Pacific Rim’ among the nominees for the VES Awards

“Gravity,” “Pacific Rim,” “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” and “The Wolf of Wall Street” were among the nominees announced Tuesday morning for the Visual Effects Society’s 12th VES Awards honoring visual effects artistry in film, animation, television, commercials and video games.

Nominated for outstanding visual effects in a visual effects-driven feature motion picture are “Gravity,” “Iron Man 3,” “Pacific Rim,” “Star Trek Into Darkness” and “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”

In contention for outstanding supporting visual effects in a feature motion picture are “Rush,” “The Great Gatsby,” “The Lone Ranger,” “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and “White House Down.”

Vying for the award for outstanding animation in an animated feature motion picture are “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2,” “Despicable Me 2,” “Frozen,” “Monsters University” and “The Croods.”

Nominees for outstanding animated character in a live action motion picture are Ryan in “Gravity,” China Girl in “Oz the Great and Powerful,” Kaiju-Leatherback” in “Pacific Rim” and Smaug in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”

Outstanding animated character in an animated feature motion picture are Bomba in “Epic,” Mary Katherine in “Epic,” Bringing the Snow Queen to Life in “Frozen” and Eep in “The Croods.”

Nominated for outstanding created environment in a live action feature are “Elysium,” “Gravity,” “Iron Man 3” and “Pacific Rim.”

Outstanding created environment in an animated motion picture are the pot patch in “Epic,” Elsa’s ice palace in “Frozen,” the campus in “Monster’s University” and the maze in “The Croods.”

Nominees for outstanding virtual cinematography in a live action motion picture are “Gravity,” “Iron Man 3,” “Man of Steel,” “Pacific Rim” and “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”

Among the TV series receiving nominations Tuesday are “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Game of Thrones” and “The Borgias.”

The VES Awards will be announced at a ceremony Feb. 12 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. As previously announced, “Gravity” director Alfonso Cuaron is this year’s recipient of the VES’ Visionary Award.
