The late James Gandolfini to receive honor at Gotham film awards

The late Emmy Award-winning actor James Gandolfini will be presented with a posthumous tribute by Steve Buscemi at the 23rd Gotham Independent Film Awards.

The awards ceremony takes place Dec. 2 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

“We are honored to pay tribute to a man whose life and work has inspired and moved so many who knew him personally, or through his vast body of work on stage and screen, where he collaborated with so many independent artists to bring to life unforgettable, iconic characters,” said Joana Vicente, executive director of the Independent Filmmaker Project and the Made in New York Media Center by IFP in a statement Wednesday.

Gandolfini, who won three Emmy Awards as New Jersey mobster Tony Soprano on HBO’s landmark “The Sopranos,” died of a heart attack in Rome in June at age 51. He’s starring in Nicole Holofcener’s posthumously released romantic comedy “Enough Said,” and will be seen next year in “Animal Rescue” with Tom Hardy.

“James Gandolfini was a friend, an inspiration and an extraordinary talent whose presence is missed by all of us who knew and loved him,” said Buscemi, who acted in and directed episodes of “The Sopranos.” “It is an honor to present this tribute at the Gotham Awards recognizing his impact.”
