“Lincoln,” “Argo,” “Les Miserables” and “Zero Dark Thirty” received multiple nominations for the 85th Academy Awards, as many pundits had predicted, but there were also several surprises on Thursday morning.

The nine nominees for best picture are “Lincoln,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Argo,” “Les Miserables,” “Life of Pi,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Amour,” “Django Unchained” and “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”

The directing nominees are Steven Spielberg for “Lincoln,” Ang Lee for “Life of Pi,” David O. Russell for “Silver Linings Playbook,” Michael Haneke for “Amour” and Benh Zeitlin for “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”

Notable omissions included directors Kathryn Bigelow for “Zero Dark Thirty,” Tom Hooper for “Les Miserables” and Ben Affleck for “Argo” -- all of whom were recently nominated for the Directors Guild of America Award.

Vying for lead actor are Daniel Day-Lewis for “Lincoln,” Bradley Cooper for “Silver Linings Playbook,” Hugh Jackman for “Les Miserables,” Joaquin Phoenix for “The Master” and Denzel Washington for “Flight.”

The five lead actress nominees are Jessica Chastain for “Zero Dark Thirty,” Jennifer Lawrence for “Silver Linings Playbook,” Emmanuelle Riva for “Amour,” Naomi Watts for “The Impossible” and 9-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis for “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”

Shut out? Leonardo DiCaprio for his role in “Django Unchained,” John Hawkes for “The Sessions,” Marion Cotillard for “Rust and Bone” and Helen Mirren for “Hitchcock,” among others.

The Oscars is scheduled to be held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Feb. 24.
