Oscars 2014: ‘Mr. Hublot’ snags win for animated short
Two first-time nominees have won the Academy Award for animated short film for “Mr. Hublot,” about an eccentric character whose orderly world is turned upside down with the arrival of a robotic pet.
From directors Laurent Witz and Alexandre Espigares, the Oscar-winning short chronicles the sweet and funny relationship between a man and his dog -- albeit in a steampunk world.
“Mr. Hublot” beat out four other animated shorts for the Oscar win, including the Mickey Mouse-starring “Get a Horse!” that played before the Disney’s box-office giant “Frozen.”
Other nominees included “Feral,” about a wild boy who is forced back into civilization after growing up in the woods; “Possessions,” which follows a traveler who seeks shelter in a shrine filled with broken objects possessed by goblin spirits; and”Room on the Broom,” about a kind witch who invites various animal friends to join her on her broom.
“Mr. Hublot” was written by Witz. Espigares, who co-directed, is known for his animation work on “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” “9” and “Happy Feet Two.”
The 86th Academy Awards are being held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
