SAG Awards 2014: Robert De Niro sneaks in another cameo

Share

Robert De Niro wasn’t technically nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award this year, but leave it to Bobby D. to find a way into the winner’s circle regardless.

At the SAG Awards ceremony on Saturday night, De Niro was on hand to present the award for best actress, which went to Cate Blanchett for her role in “Blue Jasmine.” After delivering the statuette and a peck on the cheek to Blanchett, De Niro, who last year was nominated for his supporting role in “Silver Linings Playbook” and as part of that film’s ensemble, was presumably done for the night.

A few minutes later, however, De Niro popped up on stage again with the ensemble cast winners from “American Hustle.” That’s because — minor spoiler alert — De Niro has an uncredited role in the David O. Russell con film, playing a notorious mob boss (though one quite different from his previous wiseguy incarnations).

Since De Niro went uncredited in “Hustle,” his name didn’t appear on the award’s cast list either. That’s not to begrudge De Niro for sharing a moment with his costars, nor to suggest he was stealing anyone’s thunder by standing on the far edge of the assembled actors.

It was more of a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo. Perhaps he’s getting used to those.
