The South by Southwest Film Festival and Conference, which wraps up later Saturday, announced its audience award winners.
“Short Term 12,” written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, won the audience prize for the Narrative Feature Competition. The film also won the festival’s grand jury prize. The story concerns a young woman whose job as a supervisor at a foster-care group home forces her to confront her own long-repressed issues.
“The Short Game,” directed by Josh Greenbaum, won the audience award for the Documentary Feature competition. The film follows a group of 7-year-old competitors at the World Championships of Junior Golf.
Other audience prizes went to “An Unreal Dream: The Michael Morton Story,” directed by Al Reinert, for Documentary Spotlight; “Zero Charisma,” directed by Katie Graham and Andrew Matthews, for Narrative Spotlight; “Maidentrip,” directed by Jillian Schlesinger, for Visions; and “Cheap Thrills,” directed by E.L. Katz, for Midnighters.
“A Band Called Death,” directed by Mark Christopher Covino and Jeff Howlett, won for 24 Beats Per Second; “The Punk Syndrome,” directed by Jukka Kärkkäinen and J-P Passi, won for SXGlobal; and “The Crash Reel,” directed by Lucy Walker, won for Festival Favorites.
The audience prize for excellence in poster design went to Akiko Stehrenberger for “Kiss of the Damned,” which won the grand jury prize as well. Excellence in Title Design went to “Chasing Shakespeare,” designed by Lucky Post.
The SXSW Film Festival closes out its 20th edition Saturday with screenings of Ramin Bahrani’s “At Any Price,” and Zal Batmanglij’s “The East.”
