Latin Grammys 2013: Natalie Cole, Alejandro Sanz among nominees

Natalie Cole’s debut Spanish-language album, “En Español,” is among the nominees for the Latin Grammy awards for album of the year, a prize that also is being sought by perennial contenders Miguel Bose, Carlos Vives, Alejandro Sanz, and Bajofondo, the L.A.-Argentine-Uruguayan collective, among others.

Cole’s album of covers of classic Spanish-language tunes became a crossover hit this year. The R&B singer was following the example of her father, Nat King Cole, whose best-selling recordings of Spanish songs half a century ago helped bridge the Spanish-language and English-language recording worlds.

She also was nominated for record of the year for “Bachata Rosa,” her duet with Juan Luis Guerra.

Draco Rosa, the Puerto Rican-American singer-songwriter, was a multiple nominee too. His song “Más Y Más,” featuring Ricky Martin, was nominated for record of the year, and his album “Vida” received a nod for album of the year and best contemporary pop album.

The nominations were announced this morning at the Avalon in Hollywood.

As often has been the case, the most competitive category appears to be best new artist. Among the nominees are a Band of Bitches, Leslie Cartaya, Clarice Falcâo, Mojito Lite and
Gaby Moreno.
