‘Homeland’s’ Damian Lewis reveals next season’s emotional trauma

“Homeland’s” Damian Lewis dropped by to talk about the Showtime drama’s upcoming season, which will air on Sept. 29. Lewis elaborated on the recently revealed news that his character, Sgt. Nicholas Brody, won’t be seen on the show’s first two episodes because ... you know ... he’s a wanted man and has to lay low because of the whole CIA headquarters bombing thing.

Lewis joked how the “Homeland” producers have been trying to kill him off since “Day One,” but he’s still around, as is the family he left behind. In fact, Lewis revealed that it’s not necessarily Brody’s relationship with Claire Danes’ CIA operative, Carrie, that needs to be addressed this season, but the bond between Brody and his teen daughter, Dana.

Lewis also went on at length about the various levels of emotional devastation each “Homeland” character would endure in coming episodes.

“It will be a season about broken people and broken institutions rebuilding themselves,” says Lewis, who won the lead actor drama Emmy last year and is nominated again in the category. “Or, this being ‘Homeland,’ failing to rebuild themselves. It’s just another date night with the ‘Homeland’ crew. It’s the anti-rom-com.”
