Mindy Kaling talks Season 3 of ‘Mindy Project’ -- a thong-y situation?

Share

It’s been a little over two months since a heaving Mindy Lahiri and Danny Castellano rekindled their romance atop the Empire State Building in the Season 2 closer of “The Mindy Project.” But will a flimsy piece of underwear threaten their rom-com when the show returns for its third season?

Mindy Kaling, the creator of the show who also plays the titular character, stopped by the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday to discuss how the show and the character have evolved thus far, and hinted at what’s to come.

The show’s writers got back to work recently, and as Kaling noted in a tweet and in our chat, things have been “spectacularly” raunchy. Kaling revealed that a storyline that’s been pitched involves Mindy finding a mysterious thong at Danny’s apartment.

“It was so titillating to us because we are such nerds,” she said. “We’re like undersexed nerds, our writers.”

Kaling said the Season 3 opener is currently titled, “Danny’s Secret,” but “that could change.”

“It is so funny and there’s so many fun twists and turns,” she said. “I can’t wait for people to see it. I say that about every episode, but this one is particularly packed with incidents and things.”

And fans of Kaling already know that she’s working on a follow-up to her 2011 bestselling book “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (and Other Concerns).” The sophomore entry will pick up where the first book left off in her life --covering topics spurred by “The Mindy Project,” her mother’s passing, etc.

“I wanted to write another book because I can only fit so much into the show,” she said. “We just came up with the title -- ‘Why Not Me?’ which has kind of been my subconscious motto my whole life.”

Kaling also discussed whether she’s considered directing an episode of the comedy (yes!), her ambitions for writing a feature film romantic comedy, and what characters from another show she would like to see make a stop at “The Mindy Project.” Check it out in the video above.
