He was a teenager when he starred in "Stand by Me" and when he earned an Academy Award nomination for his performance in "Running on Empty." Phoenix was a vegan, environmentalist and animal rights activist. In 1993, he died of an accidental drug overdose at age 23 in front of the Viper Room club in West Hollywood.
