'Veronica Mars' movie a go after Kickstarter success

"Veronica Mars" creator Rob Thomas and leading lady Kristen Bell launched a Kickstarter campaign Wednesday to raise $2 million for a feature film that would take place at the acid-tongued sleuth's 10-year high school reunion. Devoted fans did not hesitate to reach into their wallets, and in less than 24 hours they had raised the entire amount. The overnight success of the fundraising effort — the biggest film campaign in Kickstarter history, and the fastest to reach the $1-million threshold — represents a milestone in Hollywood moviemaking economics, demonstrating that devoted fan communities can rally to support projects that mainstream studios might otherwise reject.
