Jessica Simpson wants to get back to singing, not reality TV or ex Nick Lachey

Once upon a time, Jessica Simpson was known for her powerhouse vocal chops. That was long before she became a reality star, actress, fashion mogul and weight-loss spokeswoman.

The “Irresistible” singer, who is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of her eponymous billion-dollar fashion line at New York Fashion Week, recently said on the “Today” show that she’s hoping to get back in the studio and also play live concerts.

“That’s how I started and that’s always one of my biggest passions in the world. I love to use my voice,” she told Savannah Guthrie.

The 35-year-old added that her husband, former NFL player Eric Johnson, hasn’t really seen her perform on stage and do the “thing that actually got me here now.”

One job she’s not planning on getting back to? Reality TV. She and her ex-husband, 98 Degrees frontman Nick Lachey, starred in their own MTV series, which showcased Simpson’s less-polished moments (Chicken of the Sea and Buffalo wings always come to mind, here.)

“That’s very rearview,” the mother of two said, laughing. “I mean, I’m very open with fans and the media, but having a camera on me at all times, I mean, we all know I stick my foot in my mouth a little bit too much, so now that I’m a mom, I probably have to keep it together a little bit better.”

Simpson later told Page Six that she “would have a panic attack” when she came across reruns of “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica.” She and Lachey were featured on the show for three seasons before they divorced in 2005 after about three years of marriage.

That’s not the only less-than-flattering remark she had about her first marriage while doing the rounds this week. When asked on CNBC’s “Closing Bell” to name her biggest money mistake, the “Dukes of Hazzard” star replied, “I don’t know. For some reason I thought of my first marriage!”

(It turns out that’s a very common answer, according to “Closing Bell’s” Kelly Evans.)

Meanwhile, Lachey has moved on with his life too, going on to marry TV personality Vanessa Lachey, with whom he has two children. The singer said in 2013 that he hadn’t spoken to his ex-wife in six years, and last November, he said it was probably best that he and Simpson hadn’t had children together.

“There’s just no contact. We’ve both moved on with our lives, and I think we are very happy it went the way it went. It’s not animosity, it’s not friendship — it’s just kind of nothing,” Lachey said on Dirty, Sexy, Funny with Jenny McCarthy.
