Joan Rivers has been rushed to Manhattan’s Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York police said Thursday morning, reportedly after suffering complications during an outpatient surgery at a nearby doctor’s office.

“This morning, Joan Rivers was taken to the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where she is being attended to,” hospital spokesman Sid Dinsay confirmed. “Her family wants to thank everybody for their outpouring of love and support. We will provide an update on her condition as it becomes available.”

Daughter Melissa Rivers was en route to her mother’s side, said a spokesperson for E!, which airs “Fashion Police.”

“E!, Fashion Police and NBCUniversal continue to send thoughts and prayers to Joan, Melissa and their entire family,” the network said in a statement.

Emergency medical services personnel brought the veteran stand-up comic and “Fashion Police” star to the hospital from “a doctor’s office on 93rd Street,” NYPD Det. Kellyann Ort told The Times. Ort had no comment about Rivers’ condition.

The 81-year-old had reportedly been undergoing throat surgery, possibly on her vocal cords, when a 911 call was placed describing a person who was either in cardiac or respiratory arrest, said TMZ, which first had the news.

A New York Fire Department spokesman confirmed that such a call had been received around 9:30 a.m. EDT, but would say only that “a woman” had been transported to Mt. Sinai.

According to E! News, the comic had stopped breathing during surgery and was in critical condition when authorities arrived.

Later, at the hospital, Rivers’ assistant, Graham Reed, was overheard saying, “She’s not conscious, but she’s stable,” the New York Daily News reported. An “obviously distraught” Reed would not answer questions, the paper said.

E! News, which is affiliated with the network that airs “Fashion Police,” also had a source saying the show’s star was in stable condition at the hospital.

Joan Rivers had showed up “bright and early” on Tuesday morning to tape a 90-minute special edition of “Fashion Police” with Kelly Osbourne, Giuliana Rancic and George Kotsiopoulos, wrapping up coverage of the Emmy Awards and MTV Video Music Awards, an E! spokesperson said.

Rivers’ publicist has not yet responded to The Times’ request for comment.
