John Mayer surprises Katy Perry on ‘Ellen,’ responds to ‘Bound 2’

The Katy Perry-John Mayer love tour just hit “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

The “Roar” singer appeared on the daytime talk show Friday to promote her album “Prism” and show off her latest video with her crooning beau, who later surprised her onstage. They also had a bone to pick with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. (More on that later.)

Mayer and Perry premiered the music video for their duet “Who You Love” earlier this week and said that they shot it about two week ago. It just happens to feature real-life couples riding a mechanical bull.

“We did it in one day, and they were real-life couples — all of us — and they were put on a bull and just shot in slow motion,” the 29-year-old pop vixen said.

“They’re on the bull for about two seconds, but we shot in such slow motion that you get about a minute of footage, Mayer, 36, added. “That was the first time I did it sober. That was the first sober bull ride,” Mayer quipped.

But the visual interpretation of the love song happened to remind the comedian of another lovey-dovey duet: Kanye West’s widely spoofed video for “Bound 2” that features fiancee Kim Kardashian riding a motorcycle topless. (West happened to premiere it on DeGeneres’ show in November.)

“Was it your response to Kim and Kanye’s ‘Bound 2’?” DeGeneres asked of the “Who You Love” video.

“Yes,” Perry asserted. “I thought our response was a little bit more authentic because my hair was blowing in the right direction, though.”

“She was facing backwards, right?” DeGeneres agreed. “So her hair should have been [blowing the other way].”

Interjects Mayer: “This is why I don’t need to talk at home. Voice rest is just fine because then you get these chestnuts.”

It’s OK, Perry and DeGeneres didn’t know what to make of that statement either.

Earlier in their interview, Perry told DeGeneres that she and her “thoughtful,” “creative” beau are very quiet at home because the singers need frequent vocal cord rest. Mayer spent a long time recovering from vocal cord problems, and the two found new ways to communicate nonverbally at home.

“I understood that he couldn’t talk, and the only way he could communicate was through an iPad,” Perry said. “Because some days I have to go on complete vocal rest, like no anything, no whispering. Whispering is actually really bad. There’s just a lot of silence in our house most of the time.”

DeGeneres suggested that the pair take up Pictionary, but Perry just said that they “should just learn how to sign-language.”

“We have a lot of fun,” she said. “We have music as an understanding and love between each other, and we connect. It’s like he understands what I do because he does the same thing. And so after a long day, if it’s been tough, I don’t really have to go into it. He just gets it. So it’s nice with that understanding.”

The couple appeared to be very happy, but Perry admitted that it took time to get there. (The pair had been on and off since Perry finalized her divorce from comedian Russell Brand in 2012.)

“I think when two people are involved, someone other than yourself, you have to figure out a compromise in a good way,” she said. “And there’s a lot of respect. You know, I really adore him and respect him as a musician, and that’s why I was excited and agreed to do a song with him.”
