Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Kate Upton dating? Say it isn’t so!

No, seriously, say it isn’t so, because it actually isn’t so.

The “Dancing With the Stars” pro and the model-turned-actress were spotting dining together late Monday in New York, sparking a report Tuesday that they were an item. Monday, incidentally, was Upton’s 21st birthday; Chmerkovskiy is 33.

“It’s very new,” a source told Us Weekly about the stars’ alleged relationship. “They were set up through friends. They just started dating.”

Hmm. Though hand-holding was reported and their behavior at dinner was deemed “very canoodly” by an eyewitness who talked to Us, a source close to Upton told the mag they’ve been friends for a while and remain that: friends.

Seems one person’s “canoodly” is another’s can’t-say-that’s-what-happened.

Management at the restaurant, Scalinatella, told E! News that the meal did “not look intimate at all.”

“They have known each other and been friends for a while,” but aren’t dating, a source close to the sitch told Gossip Cop.

Oh well, perhaps another time, another place, another canoodle. Even if romance isn’t in the cards, we can think of worse 21st birthday gifts than dinner with Maks.
