Rihanna’s CFDA Awards gown: Sparkly pantyhose or major statement?

Rihanna attended Monday’s 2014 CDFA Awards in New York wearing a sparkling, diaphanous gown that left little to the imagination and even less room for Spanx.

The “Diamonds” songstress (coincidence?) and well-known fashion risk-taker hit the event, held at the Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, to accept the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Style Icon Award, according to All the Rage.

The award was presented to her by Vogue editrix Anna Wintour, whom she dubbed her “text buddy” on Twitter.

RiRi’s gown was custom-made by designer Adam Selman and was accompanied by a blush-colored fur stole and coordinated bedazzled headscarf (that really did look like glittering pantyhose). The singer’s matching gloves and headscarf were embellished with more than 216,000 Swarovski crystals. Even so, the sparkly ensemble totally showed her breasts and butt.

The 26-year-old Grammy-winner is no stranger to body-baring looks, and when asked by E! News whether she was planning to wear the translucent confection after the show, the songstress quipped back about the nipple-revealing look:

“Why? Yes I am,’ she said. “Do my ... bother you? They’re covered in Swarovski crystals!”

Not surprisingly, the event was sponsored by the famous crystal dealer.

However, the songstress did opt for a more demure look following the awards after all, stepping out in a white gown and blazer.

“We definitely wanted to make it a little bit scandalous,” Selman told Style.com. “The dress is just fishnet and crystals and a couple of fingers crossed. But fashion is about beauty, and the [female] body is part of that.”

“It’s so naked,” her stylist Mel Ottenberg told the site. “I don’t know if it’s shocking — I’m with her all the time, so my shock gauge is off, but I told her that I thought she was ready for this dress a while ago, and that I wasn’t. I’m the prude, and I’m just catching up.”

“So many people didn’t sleep last night,” he added of the work that went into prepping the gown. “I would say at least eight people worked nonstop from 8 p.m. last night to 3 p.m. today putting on the finishing touches.”

“Rihanna has become the rare celebrity who does not follow fashion-she affects it,” read a tweet from Vogue’s official Twitter account, which was retweeted by the singer.

The fashion codex enlisted the Barbadan beauty for its March cover story and called the feature “The Rihanna Effect.”

The singer is also at the center of Scout Willis’ “Free the Nipple” campaign on social media following Instagram’s removal of photos showing Rihanna baring her breasts on a magazine cover.

But back to the awards: Other daring looks at the show included “SNL” alum Chris Kattan’s revival of his leather-shorts-wearing character Mango, who will be featured in designer Alexander Wang’s film by the same name, according to Just Jared.

On the covered upside of the spectrum, the Row’s twin designers Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen wore similar long, black frocks as they accepted the award for accessories of the year.

Fashion darling Lupita Nyong’o, who was recently cast in the upcoming “Star Wars: Episode VII,” wore a colorful pants ensemble by Suno. “Gossip Girl” star Blake Lively went for 1960s glam with a golden minidress by Michael Kors, whom she accompanied to the show, and retro headband and earrings.

The night’s big winners were Joseph Altuzarra for Womenswear Designer of the Year and Public School’s Maxwell Osborne & Dao-Yi Chow for Menswear Designer of the Year.
