It was meant to be a lighthearted question: “What did you learn from your mothers about beauty?”

“Ariel should take this one,” Ed O’Neill said, prompting Sofia Vergara to push Ariel Winter forward.

What’s wrong with that, you might ask? Well, Winter, 15, has been embroiled in a nasty public spat with her mother over the past year or so, with the young actress, who’s now living with her older sister, accusing her mother of calling her fat and depriving her of food.

Suffice to say, when Winter was pushed toward the microphone, she looked like a deer in the headlights and awkwardly backed away. And then her costars graciously answered on her behalf.
