‘Captain America: Civil War’ footage turns America’s hero into a wanted man
Walt Disney Co. Chairman and Chief Executive Robert Iger showcased a collection of new footage from the company’s slate of upcoming films at its annual shareholder meeting Thursday.
Most notable was a lengthy clip from the Marvel Studios film “Captain America: Civil War,” which centers on the fracturing of the Avengers into opposing factions. It will be released May 6.
Before showing the scene, Iger cautioned that the special effects were incomplete, but said that he wanted to share it with audience at the Auditorium Theatre nonetheless.
Here’s what we saw from inside the room:
The clip started off with a car chase featuring a motorcycle and a black Audi SUV. The chase involved Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Falcon (Anthony Mackie). They pursued each other through a tunnel, which became engulfed in explosions generated by the skirmish.
Eventually, the characters emerged from the tunnel, only to be met by War Machine (Don Cheadle). It appeared as though he was on the scene to detain Captain America.
“Stand down now,” War Machine angrily told the captain. “Congratulations, Cap, you’re a criminal.”
Black Panther then intervened, baring his metal claws and ripping off his mask to reveal his identity.
At its conclusion, the clip was met with generous applause. Iger noted that the film marks Black Panther’s first appearance in a Disney-produced Marvel film. Separately, the character is getting his own movie, scheduled for release in 2018.
Later, during the Q&A portion of the meeting, a shareholder asked Iger if the motorcycle shown in the scene was a Harley-Davidson. Iger said he’d find out and get back to him. (After the meeting, a spokeswoman for Disney confirmed the motorcycle was a Harley-Davidson.)
