His crown keeps him alive, but it also drove him crazy.
"Adventure Time" fans know that Ice King was formerly Simon Petrikov, a human studying to be an antiquarian of ancient artifacts who didn't quite believe in the supernatural until he came to possess a special magical crown.
The magical crown gave Simon the power of ice and snow and helped him survive the apocalyptic Mushroom War -- but in exchange the crown slowly robbed him of his sanity (and memories).
The six-part miniseries will be written by Emily Partridge (whose "Adventure Time" resume includes being a storyboard artist and previously a revisionist artist for the TV series as well as some comic book covers) with art by Natalie Andrewson (whose resume includes variant covers for "Lumberjanes" and "Marceline Gone Adrift").
The main cover for the first issue is by Shelli Paroline and Braden Lamb, who did the art for the main "Adventure Time" comic book series during Ryan North's run (they also collaborated on the non-"Adventure Time" "Midas Flesh").
The first issue of "Adventure Time: Ice King" will also have a subscription variant cover by Corin Howell and an incentive variant by Wyeth Yates. Check out all of the covers in the gallery above.
Here's hoping the miniseries will feature plenty of Gunter and at least one appearance from Marceline.
"Adventure Time: Ice King" will be published by KaBoom, the all-ages imprint of Boom Studios. The first issue is scheduled to hit comic book shops in January.

What's to love: The Ice King is probably one of the most tragic and hilarious characters in the Land of Ooo, but we've never had the chance to really focus exclusively on him before. Now we're taking a look at just what makes the Ice King tick with writer Emily Partridge ("Adventure Time") and artist Natalie Andrewson ("Lumberjanes").
What it is: The Ice King has always been there, kidnapping princesses, messing with Finn and Jake, and generally being a weirdo. But there's way more to him than that! He's a deep, thoughtful person with a heart full of love! Or ... maybe he just really wants to marry a princess. Either way, this is one journey the citizens of Ooo aren't likely to forget!
