THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Heather Locklear was cited by Ventura County Sheriff's deputies after allegedly leaving the scene of a car accident near her home in Westlake Village.
Locklear, 48, veered off the road and crashed into a no-parking sign at the intersection of Lakeview Canyon Road and Falling Star Avenue around 4 a.m. Saturday morning, according to Capt. Ross Bonifiglio.
She then drove away without notifying authorities, Bonifiglio said.
A resident near the accident scene was awakened by the crash.
He didn't report the incident until later that day when he discovered the damaged sign and debris from the car on the side of the road.
Bonifilio said investigators matched the debris to Locklear's black 2005 BMW.
They also determined that Locklear was driving the car after viewing surveillance video taken from the guard gate at the North Ranch Country Club estates in Westlake Village where the actress lives.
When investigators arrived at her home, they found the car with damage to the tire well on the passenger side.
She was cited with a misdemeanor traffic ticket and was not taken into custody, Bonifiglio said.
When Locklear was cited, around 8 p.m., 16 hours after the accident, she did not appear intoxicated, deputies said.
Locklear was cooperative, Bonifiglio said.
Because it was a misdemeanor citation, "she was not handcuffed, not put in a police car, not driven anywhere and not given a booking photo." Bonifiglio said.
Locklear is due to appear in court in Simi Valley on May 17 at 8:15 a.m.
Locklear was arrested for DUI in September, 2008 after a driver called police and said she was driving erratically.
She had checked into a medical clinic to seek treatment for anxiety and depression in June, 2008.
The DUI charge was ultimately dropped after the actress pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor reckless driving charge.
Locklear was sentenced to three years informal probation, was fined $700 and was mandated to attend a 12-hour road and safety class.
Locklear grew up in Thousand Oaks and is best known for her roles on television shows including Dynasty and Melrose Place.
