Thomas Gainsborough's "The Blue Boy" (1770) is one of the Huntington's most recognizable artworks, and may be the most famous European Old Master painting in the United States. The artist painted the portrait of his friend Jonathan Buttall for fun rather than as a commission. Henry Huntington paid about $800,000 (more than $8 million in today's dollars) for the painting in 1921.
