TV’s Hall of Fame honors new artists

The star of “Maude,” a creative force behind “MASH,” a talk show host and the creator of “Gilligan’s Island” were among those announced Thursday for induction into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame.

“Their respective careers have stood the test of time and their accomplishments extend over decades,” said Mark Itkin, chairman of the academy’s selection committee.

This year’s inductees are:

Bea Arthur, a two-time Emmy-winning actress who starred in “Maude” and “The Golden Girls”; Larry Gelbart, who helped develop “MASH” for television; Merv Griffin, who hosted his own talk show for 23 years and also created the game shows “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune”; Sherwood Schwartz, the writer-producer behind “Gilligan’s Island” and “The Brady Bunch”; and two former chief executive officers of Capital Cities/ABC, Thomas Murphy and Daniel B. Burke.

“This year’s inductees have each helped shape our industry and are an inspiration for everyone involved in our business,” said John Shaffner, academy chairman.
