Civil rights activist | 'Malcolm X' (1992)

The second film that Washington made with director Spike Lee following 1990's "Mo' Better Blues," the controversial "Malcolm X," traces the life of one of the 20th century's most incendiary personalities from his days as a criminal to his transformative prison stint, his conversion to Islam, his key role as a civil rights leader and his assassination. Washington was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for his performance.
