The purr-formance: Tonto doesn't say much (OK, anything) in this touching, melancholic road film starring Art Carney as Harry. Yet Tonto is the most faithful of companions, a cat that shows the kind of loyalty toward its widowed owner that's more stereotypically reserved for dogs. Harry and Tonto travel from New York to Los Angeles, and Tonto is all wide-eyed optimism. As Harry struggles to connect with his scattered family, his goofy yet loner personality is more perfectly suited for Tonto's unjudging purring. The cat's meow: Show this film to those stuffy dog-only folks, as Tonto is curious, friendly to strangers and even responds to his name. Fine, the last one is a little bit of a stretch, but Tonto is as loving a pet as they come. For Harry, taking care of Tonto practically seems like it's what gets him out of bed.
