Internet advertising continues to explode as spending topped $20 billion during the first six months of this year.

The Internet Advertising Bureau touted the milestone on Wednesday, saying the surge in spending during the first half of 2013 represented an 18% increase over the $17 billion spent during the first half of 2012.

Marketers increasingly are steering their dollars from traditional media and onto the Internet and mobile platforms.

Advertising for mobile devices more than doubled, the bureau said. During the first half of this year, advertising on smartphones and tablets reached $3 billion compared with $1.2 billion during the previous year period.

“Mobile advertising’s breakneck growth is evidence that marketers are recognizing the tremendous power of smaller screens,” Randall Rothenberg, chief executive of the bureau, said in a statement.

“Digital video is also on a positive trajectory,” he said.
