Who they are: The mockumentary series on ABC follows the lives of the Pritchett, Dunphy and Pritchett-Tucker families that make up a unique "modern family." Patriarch Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill) is married to a young Colombian bombshell (Sofia Vergara) whose too-smart-for-his-own-good son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez), keeps them on their toes. Jay's high-strung daughter, Claire (Julie Bowen), and her goofy husband, Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell), have a more traditional family consisting of three kids. And Jay's son, Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), lives with his flamboyant partner, Cameron (Eric Stonestreet), with whom he has adopted a Vietnamese baby. What the kids like: The kids enjoy Phil's and Cameron's slapstick antics, Manny's old-man tendencies and the varied Dunphy children's relatability. What the parents can't get enough of: The comedy hits home for adults when awkward social situations (like staining a friend's white carpet with wine or tracking down a pointed email about a bake sale) make the characters do what viewers wish they could.
