First official ‘Deadpool’ trailer makes fun of Ryan Reynolds’ past superhero work

Share

The “Deadpool” trailer is out, and after many years and many so-so superhero parts for Ryan Reynolds, this finally feels like the right fit.

First, Ryan Reynolds was cast as Wade Wilson (aka Deadpool) in the 2009 “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” -- a movie that would stitch his character’s mouth shut, basically muting the comic book antihero and stripping him of the thing he was known best for as “the merc with a mouth.” Next Reynolds would suit up as the Green Lantern, but this comic book adaptation was another misfire with fans.

Perhaps Reynolds has finally found his superhero fit, because the latest trailer for “Deadpool” (penned by “Zombieland” writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick and directed by Tim Miller) finally seems to capture what is so great about this character and the actor: the sass.

Casting aside all other past iterations of main character Wilson, this new movie sets up a new origin story similar to the comic, while gleefully making fun of itself and its own lead actor Reynolds. “And please don’t make the supersuit green, or animated,” is a wonderfully self-aware rip.

And for those of you familiar with the fourth-wall-breaking, pop-culture-referencing mercenary, you’ve probably noticed that the trailer is pretty tame for a Deadpool creation. Don’t worry, there’s a whole expletive-riddled red band trailer at this link, because “Deadpool” is rated hard R -- a point star Reynolds made abundantly clear at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Here’s the official synopsis from 21st Century Fox: “Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional antihero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.”

Lots of fun comic book stuff in here, including a Colossus cameo. “Deadpool” hits theaters Feb. 16.
