Uma Thurman’s appearance at Monday’s premiere of her NBC mini-series “The Slap” garnered some speculative attention and the actress addressed the brouhaha during an appearance on “Today” on Thursday.

“I know I looked weird!” the 44-year-old told Savannah Guthrie. “I don’t know, I guess nobody liked my makeup, you know.”

The “Kill Bill” star raised eyebrows when she walked the red carpet at New York’s New Museum because of the departure from her typical maquillage. Monday’s look pronounced her eyebrows, cheekbones and mascara-less lashes and seemed to lift her whole face. The makeover led onlookers to believe that she was “unrecognizable” or had gone under the knife (a la Renee Zellweger last October).

“I’ve been doing this for years and years and years and people say things nice and they say things mean and it’s just like whatever. You take the good with the bad,” she said, later adding: “We saw how well the dark lipstick worked the other night!”

Tony Surratt, her longtime makeup artist, made up the “Pulp Fiction” alum for the evening and it’s pretty clear that she was wearing more makeup than usual, telling Refinery29 that the final product was “more editorial than it was celebrity.”

“We did a much stronger brow and a bold lip for a French sort of feel,” he said. “I applied a creamy foundation for all-over glow, and then contoured the hairline and her cheekbones, adding warmth. I applied the lip ... and then we just kept the eyes really, really light.”

The eye-lifting maneuver that caused such a fuss turned out to be a simple trick with an eyebrow pencil.

“The way I shaded her eyebrows with the pencil, I created an uplifting effect,” he added. “Then, I finished with a shimmering, silky-beige shadow on her lids, and went with no mascara at all ... sort of a reaction against all the fake lashes we’ve been seeing on the red carpet.”

“The Slap,” which also stars Melissa George, Peter Sarsgaard, Thandie Newton and Zachary Quinto, airs Thursday. Read our review here.
