Christian Bale will not be playing Steve Jobs in director Danny Boyle’s upcoming biopic about the late Apple co-founder after all.

Although Bale had engaged in talks for the Sony project in recent weeks, things never reached the stage of formal negotiations, and he is no longer in discussions for the role, The Times has confirmed. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.

Bale’s exit comes less than two weeks after screenwriter Aaron Sorkin said the 40-year-old British actor was set to play Jobs.

“We needed the best actor on the board in a certain age range, and that’s Chris Bale,” Sorkin said in a recent interview with Bloomberg. He added that Bale “didn’t have to audition — well, there was a meeting.”

Bale marks the second high-profile actor to pass on the film, after Leonardo DiCaprio.
