Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. announces its first wave of winners

The Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. has announced its first wave of winners, with more selections to be announced Sunday afternoon.

Lupita Nyong’o received supporting actress honors for “12 Years a Slave,” in which she played the abused plantation slave Patsey. Runner-up was June Squibb for “Nebraska.”

There was a tie for best supporting actor: James Franco as a rapper/gangster named Alien in “Spring Breakers” and Jared Leto as a transsexual suffering from AIDS in “Dallas Buyers Club.”

Leto also won the New York Film Critics Circle Award last week for the drama. And there has been a nontraditional Oscar campaign spearheaded by “Spring Breakers” distributor A24 for Franco for the low-budget indie film directed by Harmony Korine.

The French-Belgian production “Ernest and Celestine” won best animated feature, with runner-up going to Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Wind Rises.”

Best documentary went to Sarah Polley’s “Stories We Tell.” The film also won the New York Film Critics Circle and National Board of Review honors last week. Runner-up was “The Act of Killing.”

Emmanuel Lubezki won best cinematography and Alfonson Cuarón and Mark Sanger got the award for best editing, all for “Gravity.” Cinematography runner-up was Bruno Delbonnel for “Inside Llewyn Davis” and editing runner-up was Shane Carruth and David Lowery for “Upstream Color.”

Best music score went to T Bone Burnett for “Inside Llewyn Davis.” Runner-up was “Her,” by Arcade Fire and Owen Pallett.

Production design honors went to K.K. Barrett for “Her”; runner-up was Jess Gonchor for “Inside Llewyn Davis.”

The Douglas Edwards Independent/Experimental Film/Video Award went to “Cabinets of Wonder: Films and a Performance by Charlotte Pryce.”

“A Hard Day’s Night” and “Help!” director Richard Lester was previously announced as the winner of the career achievement honor.

The awards will be handed out Jan. 11 at a ceremony at the Intercontinental Hotel in Century City.
