Tribeca 2015: A Monty Python reunion and doc head for the States

Monty Python is reuniting (mostly), this time in the U.S.

The Tribeca Film Festival announced Tuesday that the famed comedy troupe will come together at this year’s gathering to mark some anniversaries, commemorate a new documentary and seek the holy grail in the castle of aaargh.

A retrospective for the group will include screenings of classic Python comedies such as “Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life,” “Monty Python’s Life of Brian” and “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” the last of which will be celebrating its 40th anniversary.

All five surviving members — John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin — will be present the “Grail” screening, which will take place April 24 at New York’s Beacon Theatre. Various members will appear at Q&As after all the screenings.

The Pythons came together last summer for “Monty Python is Reuniting (Mostly),” offering shows at London’s O2 Theatre in what they said will be their last performance as a group. A documentary about that reunion from Roger Graef and James Rogan, titled “Monty Python — The Meaning of Live,” wlll also be screened at the fest; the movie takes viewers backstage for those performances and also examines the larger phenomenon of Monty Python.

Of the film-fest celebration, Palin said in a statement Tuesday, “The Pythons are looking forward very much to the Tribeca Film Festival and the chance to meet anyone who can remember why we made ‘Monty Python and The Holy Grail.’ All we know is that it was a documentary about coconuts that rather lost its way. If anyone at Tribeca can explain why we made it and didn’t call it Braveheart then our visit to New York will not have been wasted.”

Tribeca gets underway April 15. And if with all this nostalgia you’re feeling lost in a sea of Python, don’t worry — you are all individuals.
