Donald Glover bares his self-doubts

Share

Musicians are often prone to soul-baring binges on social media, but perhaps none have gone as brutally introspective as Donald Glover did this week.

The “Community” actor and MC (as Childish Gambino) uploaded a poignant series of photos to Instagram over the weekend listing his myriad doubts about himself, his future and his career. His concerns ranged from the esoteric (“I’m afraid I hate who I really am”) to the prosaic (“I’m scared my girl will get pregnant at not the exact time we want”). The Residence Inn stationery adds its own extra bit of loneliness.

Some of the notes are revealingly specific to his career. In one, he says “I’m afraid Dan Harmon [“Community’s” creator] hates me,” and in another frets that “I’m scared I’ll never grow out of Bro Rape,” the online skit that helped launch him to popular stardom. He’s only briefly appearing in the new season of “Community” and will be departing the show afterward.

The final notes are a catalog of fears and complaints about his record label, Glassnote. “The label doesn’t want me to release in December because it’s not a holiday record and I’m not a big artist,” he says. “Christmas always made me feel lonely but it helped me re-start the new year.”

It’s not all serious self-recrimination. “I’m afraid I’ll be Tyrese,” he laments. But for fans who know him as Troy Barnes on “Community” or as a pop-crossover MC, it’s a startling look at the person behind those characters.
