Azar Lawrence at LACMA

An L.A. summer tradition as welcome as the purple haze of the jacaranda trees, LACMA’s outdoor jazz series continues with Azar Lawrence, an inventive and forward-leaning saxophonist who has performed with a wealth of luminaries who include Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard and McCoy Tyner. 5905 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles Fri., 6 p.m. Free. www.lacma.org.

Mark de Clive-Lowe celebrates ‘Church’ at the Blue Whale

A pianist, producer and DJ, Mark de Clive-Lowe can probably add the term chemist to his resume for his jazz-infused live sets combined with in-the-moment remixing he’s offered on a regular basis in New York City and Los Angeles for a night he’s simply called “Church.”

Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog at Largo

A gifted and extraordinarily busy guitarist, Marc Ribot has been heard backing Tom Waits, John Zorn and, most recently, Neko Case on her latest album.

While Ribot’s ventures into the many tributaries of jazz have included his Cuban jazz group Los Cubanos Postizos, a noirish 2010 solo album and a bracing new trio recording taken from the Village Vanguard, here he presents his feral yet tuneful avant-rock outfit Ceramic Dog, proving there may be no limit to the musical styles in which Ribot can excel.
