Royal by blood or marriage: Feeling burdened by her royal blood, Princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn) plays hooky from the duties of her unnamed country during a visit to Rome. Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck), an expatriate American reporter, rescues her from a bench after she escapes the palace, and the pair falls in love while sightseeing. Bradley does not recognize the princess at first, but when he learns her true identity, he offers his editors an exclusive story with photos. The price: $5,000 (more than $47,000 in today's money). Proof she's a princess: Princess Ann tells Bradley to call her "Anya," but while she pretends to be a commoner, her royal manner gives her away. So does her refusal to sleep on the couch in Joe's apartment. Adorable sidekick: No furry friends here, but there's an iconic scene on a scooter that could make even the stuffiest royals want to take on the mischievous means of transportation.
