‘Daily Show’s’ Larry Wilmore has problems with black Captain America

Share

Marvel Comics recently announced that Captain America, that most wholesome symbol of everything America stands for, would soon be depicted as a black man. Sam Wilson, once known as Cap’s sidekick, The Falcon, would be taking over the role from Steve Rogers in the comic books. A triumph for Marvel’s efforts at diversity?

Not according to “The Daily Show’s” “Senior Black Correspondent” Larry Wilmore, soon to be host of his own show, “The Minority Report.”

“Daily Show” host Jon Stewart brought up the change during a discussion of tensions between uniformed police officers and the black community in New York on Monday night’s show. But Wilmore could only manage a sarcastic golf clap to kick off the comedy bit.

“You know he’s just going to spend all his time answering questions about why you always seem to show up at crime scenes,” Wilmore said.

Wilmore brought up issues with Captain America’s red, white and blue uniform, confusing for many people since red is the color of the Bloods and blue is the color of the Crips.

Stewart tried to riff on the announcement along with Wilmore, with awkward results. When it comes to racial discussions, it’s better to leave things to the senior black correspondent.
