Samantha Bee says goodbye to ‘The Daily Show’

Thursday night, Samantha Bee became the latest -- but not the last -- “Daily Show” performer to say goodbye to the Comedy Central show.

Bee, who became the longest serving “Daily Show” correspondent in 2012, is leaving to start her own satirical news show on TBS. Bee will host and executive produce with her husband, fellow “Daily Show” correspondent Jason Jones.

Bee follows Stephen Colbert, John Oliver and Larry Wilmore out the door to begin their own comedy news shows.

In 2005, Colbert left to start “The Colbert Report” as a companion series to “The Daily Show” before leaving that show last December to take over “Late Show” from David Letterman. Oliver left in 2013 to begin “Last Week Tonight” on HBO. And Wilmore launched “The Nightly Show” following “The Daily Show” last year.

Bee’s departure is part of a turnover on the program that will be most evident when host Jon Stewart leaves in August. He’ll be replaced by South African comedian Trevor Noah.

Unlike others, Bee didn’t say a word to the audience, she came out briefly at the end of a clip package and waved a tearful goodbye to the audience, visibly overcome with emotions.
