‘Walking Dead’ Season 5 closer sets new finale ratings record

Share

The zombies are unstoppable: “The Walking Dead” ended its fifth season with its best ratings yet.

An average of 15.8 million total viewers tuned in for Sunday’s 90-minute season finale, according to Nielsen. That was up slightly from last year’s finale of 15.7 million. (The season started with a premiere that netted 17.3 million.)

The Sunday figure included a whopping 10.4 million viewers in the ages 18 to 49 demographic, the group most sought by advertisers.

According to AMC, once time-shifted playback is factored in, all 16 of the episodes from Season 5 of the zombie epic should surpass 20 million total viewers, making “Walking Dead” among the most popular shows on all of TV.

Meanwhile, Sunday’s “Talking Dead” after-show chatfest reached a new high as well with 7.5 million viewers.

The “Dead” franchise could prove a winner for AMC for many years. The producers have said the comic books that inspired the series have yielded enough ideas for seasons to come.
