Super Bowl XXXVII -- 2003 / The Team: Shania Twain, No Doubt, Sting / The Playbook: Nashville darlin' Twain opened festivities in what appeared to be an unfortunate interpretation of a "Matrix" dominatrix get-up. The off-key costuming proved even more hollow when Twain unconvincingly lip-synched her way through "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" and "Up!". Gwen Stefani brought the crowd around by storming up and down the stage, singing "I'm Just a Girl" while out of breath, off-key and in big pair of wrestling boots. As a finale, Stefani and Sting dueted "Message In a Bottle," and while she was still off-key, Stefani helped turn Sting's varnished yogi act into an odd, dare we say, surprising grunge ska pairing. / The Result: Drop kick. No thanks to Twain, Stefani saved the play by doing what she does best, super-charging a Southern California crowd in a stadium setting through sheer force of ska-sonality.
