Director: John Hillcoat — A father (Viggo Mortensen) and son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) make their way toward the coast after the apocalypse. Hoping to find food and more survivors, they barely survive the hunger and gangs they encounter along the way. Why: Cormac McCarthy's book "No Country for Old Men" brought Joel and Ethan Coen an Oscar windfall. Will "The Road" do the same for Hillcoat? The film dropped out of the awards race last year, but early positive reviews and a Golden Lion nomination at the Venice Film Festival make this one a must-see.
