Hoffman was very vocal about his distaste for the Academy Awards when he was nominated for best actor for Lenny (1974). Hoffman even went on an L.A. talk show and announced that the Academy Awards are obscene, dirty and no better than a beauty contest. He gave his tickets to his parents. His attitude didnt sit well with Oscar host Bob Hope, who quipped in his opening monologue: If Dustin Hoffman wins, hes going to have a friend pick it up George C. Scott. Hoffman, though, did show up to accept his two best actor Oscars, for 1979s Kramer Vs. Kramer and 1988s Rain Man.
