Maybe the biggest handicap against "The Borgias" was that it aired on Showtime. This year, it was premium pay channel HBO that dominated the Emmy nominations, earning a stunning 104 nods. The Times noted that "The Borgias" was "The Soprano's" meets "The Tudors," and praised Jeremy Irons, above as Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia, in particular. The Times wrote than Irons is "an actor who seems draped in the accumulated vices of the odd ducks he's played over the years, lies back and steals the show with the music of his worn, woody bassoon of a voice, soothing in a way that also pricks you to be on guard against it." Of course, "The Borgias" wasn't completely ignored, as it earned nods for ar direction, cinematography, costumes and directing.
