Venerable comic George Burns had been absent from the silver screen for several years when he made a major comeback playing opposite Walter Matthau in Neil Simon's "Sunshine Boys," about an old vaudeville team who reunite for a TV special. Matthau received a best actor nomination, but it was Burns who took home the Oscar for supporting actor. And on the supporting actress side, Lee Grant showed off her comedic flare in Warren Beatty's political satire "Shampoo." Grant played the wealthy Beverly Hills mistress of her Lothario hairdresser (Beatty) and won the supporting actress Oscar. Columbia Pictures
