James Cromwell

A co-star of "The Artist," Cromwell spoke before the Oscars about the art of silent film acting. "Even though you have dialogue and you are speaking to the actor, it's not being recorded, so you realize that to tell the story you have to allow your reactions to appear on your face and in your body, whereas so much of the work in contemporary films is to show as little as possible and be absolutely stationary and deadpan," said Cromwell. "It's the way you would act in the theater."
