The ghost: Often, this crime procedural will toy with people's desire to believe in the supernatural. Patrick Jane (Simon Baker, above) is a reformed psychic who uses his observant powers to solve crimes. Occasionally, that involves pretending to talk to a ghost, as he did in an early episode in which Jane matched wits with a so-called channeler who can speak to the dead. The two ultimately work together to stage a séance. Boo who? The police are doing the haunting, using light tricks and electronic equipment. It's all a ploy to get a confession out of a woman who believes in ghosts. A ghost doesn't have to be real to scare someone straight.
