Gibson was eager to work with director M. Night Shyamalan. "I thought 'The Sixth Sense' was as good a movie as you could ever see." Gibson had an eye-opening experience on the set, though, when Shyamalan told the star he was "doing too much," Gibson says. "Shyamalan is part of a generation that is quicker on the uptake. Working with him and Joaquin Phoenix, who has something very pure and economic in his acting, I felt prehistoric. I got some minimalism in the movie but afterward didn't want to act anymore. It wasnt ringing my bell. That's changed now. I've changed. At least I hope so."
