'Gone With the Wind' Dull as dishwater Southern gentlemen Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard) is one of the first to sign up to fight for the Confederacy. But he returns from the war and into the arms of his long-suffering wife Melanie (Olivia de Havilland) poor, wounded and unable to find himself. The only thing he knows for sure is that he still loves Scarlett (Vivien Leigh) but will never leave Melanie for her. Interestingly, Howard was 21 when he enlisted in the British cavalry in 1914 during World War I. He couldnt cope with the violence and death he witnessed in battle and returned home with shell shock in 1916. His mother told him to go into acting. Howard took his mothers advice and found the theater to be the best cure for him. By 1917, he was appearing on the London stage. Broadway followed a few years later.
