On Feb. 11, 2009 Joaquin Phoenix made a much-discussed appearance on "The Late Show With David Letterman." Ostensibly there to promote his new movie, "Two Lovers," Phoenix muttered his responses and seemed generally out of it throughout the interview. He bristled when the audience laughed at his hip-hop aspirations and took a wad of gum out of his mouth and stuck it to Letterman's desk. "Joaquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight," Letterman said at the conclusion of his appearance.
