By Emily Christianson, Los Angeles Times Massachusetts native Julie Taymor showed an affinity for the arts at an early age and went on to direct stage and screen hits like the musical "The Lion King" and "Across the Universe." Her early studies included experimental theater and puppetry through programs in the U.S. and abroad and a degree in mythology and folklore from Oberlin College in Ohio. From there she began directing stage works like "The Tempest," "Oedipus Rex" and "Juan Darien: A Carnival Mass" and TV projects like "Fool's Fire."
