2003: Norah Jones

Verdict: Jones was only the fourth artist to win best new artist and best album in the same year ( Lauryn Hill won both prizes too) and when you stack this singer-songwriter against flash-in-the-pans such as Ashanti, Michelle Branch and even Avril Lavigne, it’s easy to see why. But a few years down the road and fellow singer-songwriter John Mayer is looking like a much improved choice over Jones, who since her debut LP has remained below the radar. Potentially cursed.
